Free Wifi is coming to Accra by October

The Director General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), George Ata-Boateng, has announced deploying a Wifi for public use in Accra Metropolis by October this year. The technology-driven infrastructure, according to Mr. Ata-Boateng, will come to the public at no cost. To ensure the smooth take-off of the project, NITA has selected seven communities including some educational facilities where the tech-driven infrastructure is being test-run (piloted). These communities are Makola, Accra New Town, Abossey Okai, Madina, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Development Studies (UDS) and Ghana Technology University College (GUTC). Mr. Ata-Boateng announced this ambitious project when he interacted with over 100 participants at the 2nd African Conference on Information Systems and Technology, 2016 in Accra on Tuesday.

The two-day event which is currently underway at the precincts of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) was under theme “Information System and Technology Innovation for a Digital Africa”. The ICT expert commenting further also announced a number of Applications (Apps) being deployed and implement by his outfit to deepen wealth creation in the West African country. Among these Apps are e-Services/e-Payment Portals (eservices.gov.gh/epay.gov.gh), Government e-Workshop Project, e-Registrar Portal and e-Taxation Portal, e-Health Solution, and Cyber Security. The e-Services/e-Payment Portals, Mr. Ata-Boateng explained, is a one-stop window for which payment, services and information being offered by the various MDAs, MMDAs and all other Government of Ghana (GoG) Agencies are made available. “This is to give a broadened scope of services delivery and payment options, streamline payment and revenue collection processes and improve efficiency specifically relating to delivery of services to the public service.

The e-Payment Portal which is also branded as the ‘GEPP’ offer payment services for fixed fees, taxes, fines, tangible goods, services and Ad-hoc services. Some of the Agencies participating in the initial phase include Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Births & Deaths Registry (BDR), Driver & Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Food & Drugs Authority among others. The e-Worshop on the other hand is a platform established for (102) MDAs for the management of correspondence, messaging, email, meeting, tasks, and storing of administrative documents for easy access by staff via an intranet portal. It also provides a web-based integrated and collaborative hardware and software resources for a collaborative working environment while the e-Registrar Portal provides clients and citizens an effective and efficient means of transacting business with the Department online or anywhere, even from the comfort of their homes.
