81-year-old  woman launches her first app for iPhone

It is never late to start learning. Lean to write code in just a month. Let this story inspire you!

Octogenarian Masako Wakamiya sure knows how to use computers better than your grandma – and now she’s making apps for the iPhone.

Last week, the vibrant 81-year-old launched her very first mobile app after only starting to use computers at the age of 60. Prior to her late foray in tech, the Japanese woman clocked an impressive 43 years of service at a leading bank in the country.

To honor the age-old tradition of Hinamatsuri (better known as Girls’ Day outside of Japan), Wakamiya prepped an app for iOS that teaches people the proper way of staging their traditional doll displays for the festival.
Hinadan – named after a combination of the words hina, meaning ‘doll,’ and dan, meaning ‘tier’ – asks players to place a total of 12 dolls in their respective positions on a standard display with four tiers. The game finishes once you arrange the dolls in their correct spots.

In addition to crafting apps, the Japanese woman also maintains a blog – in Japanese and English – where she shares clips from her travels and also teaches people how to use Excel to make art.

5 ways to protect yourself from data breaches

It seems like every week there\'s another massive data breach from some service or another. I doubt any one of us haven\'t had some amount of personal information accessed from one of these services.

But you can\'t go run IT security for everyone out there. So if you don\'t want to stop using everything on the internet, here are the top five ways to guard yourself against data breaches:
1. Don\'t reuse passwords between sites. When a breach is detected, the first thing most sites do is reset passwords. If you haven\'t used that password anywhere else that stops a lot of damage right there.

2. Use long passwords. Longer passwords take longer to crack and the longer it takes to crack your password, the less interested an attacker becomes since there are other easier credentials they can crack. At the very least, just double every password\'s length by typing it twice.

3. Turn on two-factor authentication. That way, even if hackers get your password somehow, they have to go to the extra trouble of cracking the other factor which is more difficult. Remember, it\'s all about putting in speed bumps.

4. Sign up for an alert service like Have I Been Pwned? They\'ll notify you if your email is found in a breach so you can quickly make any changes you need to.

5. Only give sites the information you absolutely need to in order to make use of the service. Companies will always ask for more but if you never enter the info in the first place no attacker can get it. Some people even have a fake birthday they use on the internet.

Nothing will make you 100% breach proof of course, but hopefully these tips put in enough barriers to keep your info a little safer.

How to Speed Up a Slow Computer

(NB most of these apply to phones and Ipads but mainly focused on Windows PCs)

1. First thing first. Make sure your PC isn\\\'t infected by a virus, worm or other malware

2. Remove unused and unnecessary programs

3. Try faster alternatives to your everyday programs

If you use applications that require too much computing power to operate, you are better off replacing them with applications that do the same job as them but faster. Few resource hogging applications that you can replace are:-

*1) Most resource intensive antivirus software can be replaced with the lightweight Avast free antivirus.

*2) Microsoft Office can be replaced with OpenOffice, an open source alternative that also has loads of amazing additions.

*3) Adobe Reader can be replaced with the free Foxit Reader.

*4) The newer versions of Internet Explorer (IE 10 and above) and Microsoft Edge are less resource intensive. If you have been using an older version, it is time to upgrade IE or replace it with either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. This can also give you faster browsing speeds.

*5) The default Windows Media Player can be replaced with VLC Media Player.

8 Success lessons from Jan Koum – “WhatsApp Founder and Billionaire” for entrepreneurs Who better to inspire you to kick start your life/business than Jan Koum, the man who sold WhatsApp to Facebook for $19 billion. While some of Koum’s story seems straight out of the Silicon Valley handbook, there are some interesting deviations that may prove useful to the aspiring Master of the Tech Universe.

He developed an interest in computer programming at a young age. He taught himself how to write codes without any formal schooling. He then went on to work at Yahoo Inc. as an IT engineer. It was during his career stint at Yahoo that he made friends with Brian Acton. His friendship with Brian Acton led to the founding of Whatsapp. And the rest they say is history. 

1. Your background is not an excuse for failure in life

Jan Koum did menial jobs like cleaning and mopping at a grocery store while his mother took up a babysitting job. At a point in his life, he and his mother depended on allowances from the government. (Jan signed the agreement with Facebook on the door of the social services office where he and his mother used to stand in line to collect food stamps.)

2. School is overrated

“He was still at San Jose State University when two weeks into his job at Yahoo, one of the company’s servers broke. Yahoo cofounder David Filo called his mobile for help. ’I’m in class,’ Koum answered discreetly. ’What the fuck are you doing in class?’ Filo said. ’Get your ass into the office.’ Filo had a small team of server engineers and needed all the help he could get. ’I hated school anyway,’ Koum says. He dropped out.”

3. Details matter

“On his birthday, Feb. 24, 2009, he incorporated WhatsApp Inc. in California. ’He’s very thorough,’ says Fishman. The app hadn’t even been written yet. Koum spent days creating the backend code to synch his app with any phone number in the world, poring over a Wikipedia entry that listed international dialing prefis—he would spend many infuriating months updating it for the hundreds of regional nuances.”

4. For serious thinking, grab the pen and paper

“Early WhatsApp kept crashing or getting stuck, and when Fishman installed it on his phone, only a handful of the hundreds numbers on his address book—mostly local Russian friends—had also downloaded it. Over ribs at Tony Roma’s in San Jose, Fishman went over the problems and Koum took notes in one of the Soviet-era notebooks he’d brought over years before and saved for important projects.”

5. Be a lifelong learner

Jan Koum had a passion for learning. When he arrived in California he had an interest in information technology as a result, he began studying and practicing what he learned about software programing. He studied and practiced software programing up to the point that-he gained confidence to start writing-software codes. 

He became very skillful at writing codes that Yahoo Inc. hired him as an IT infrastructure engineer. He then gained more experience in computer programming that he was able to start his own business.

Over 1 Billion Accounts May Have Been Hacked

The massive data breach that Yahoo! confirmed to the world last week is claimed by the company to have been carried out by a "state-sponsored actor" in 2014, which exposed the accounts of at least 500 Million Yahoo users.
 
But, now it seems that Yahoo has downplayed a mega data breach and triying to hide it's own security blunder.
Recently the information security firm InfoArmor that analyzed the data breach refuted the Yahoo's claim, stating that the data breach was the work of seasoned cyber criminals who later sold the compromised Yahoo accounts to an Eastern European nation-state.
 
Over 1 Billion Accounts May Have Been Hacked -
Now, there's one more twist in the unprecedented data heist.

A recent advancement in the report indicates that the number of affected Yahoo accounts may be between 1 Billion and 3 Billion.

An unnamed, former Yahoo executive who is familiar with the company's security says that the Yahoo's back-end system's architecture is designed in such a way that all of its products use one main user database (UDB) to authenticate users, Business Insider reported Friday.

So all usernames and passwords that users enter to log into services like Yahoo Mail, Sports or Finance goes to this one central database to ensure they are valid, allowing them access.

This central database is what got compromised, and therefore, it's quite difficult to believe that the hackers who compromised the whole database walk away with just a small bunch of "the core crown jewels of Yahoo customer credentials."

Whoever carried out the hack not only stole usernames and email addresses of affected users but also pilfered other personal information, including their dates of birth, phone numbers, hashed passwords, and unencrypted security answers. So, it's unclear how Yahoo come up with the 500 Million number.

The company had not commented further on how the data breach happened or when it was discovered, citing an active investigation.

A lengthy report published by the New York Times seemingly explains that the company did not reset the passwords of its users after the breach due to the decisions made by Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer, who seemed to prioritize developing new products over making security improvements.

The reason sounds stupid, as the article reads:
"The 'Paranoids,' the internal name for Yahoo's security team, often clashed with other parts of the business over security costs. And their requests were often overridden because of concerns that the inconvenience of added protection would make people stop using the company's products."
 
If Yahoo had reset the passwords of its affected users, proper security measures would have been taken by users to protect their personal data from hackers.

Ghana’s Electoral Commission launches mobile app for real-time results

The Electoral Commission (EC) has launched an app for voters to have real-time access to officially certified results of the 7 December polls.

In addition to broadcasting the results collation process live on television, and publishing the results on the commission’s website, the EC will give the public real-time access to the officially declared results.

The mobile app (ThumbsApp) will be available on the android and IOS platforms for download.

Earlier this year, they activated a code for registered voters to check their registrationdetails on their mobile phones.

Ghana’s youth population is growing rapidly and the upcoming elections provides a window for the electoral commission to adequately engage young voters.

Following the successful debut of creative tools to engage voters in Nigeria’s 2015 general elections, Facebook is teaming up with Ghana’s Electoral commission to deploy the “I Voted” button for their users who make up 13% of the country’s population, to share their experience at the polls on election day.

66% of citizens in Ghana have voted in elections since independence and it’s the EC’s hope that these technologies can help increase participation of voters in the process.

Social Media Tracking Centre for Ghana Elections 2016 Ready to Commence
Operations

Although there is a lot of activity when it comes to monitoring mainstream
media, there is currently only an inefficient manual tracking of trends in
social media here in Ghana.

Social media provides the insight and up to the minute information that
will be imperative in ensuring a peaceful Ghana Elections 2016. It is
because of this gap in efficient data monitoring that Penplusbytes’
Flagship “Social Media Tracking Centre” (SMTC) is set to roll out ahead of
the December 7polls.

The SMTC is a system to monitor and respond in real-time to reports
emanating from social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. The
technology at the middle of  SMTC is the Aggie social media tracking
software, developed at Georgia Tech. Aggie is able to present trends
grouped around voting logistics, violence, political parties, etc.
Penplusbytes will pass the information on to the National Elections
Security Taskforce. Through rapid citizen feedback, gathered through
social media, problems that may trigger security incidents will be quickly
resolved, contributing to a peaceful election.

The centre is to be manned by a core team of tech savvies made up of
students from tertiary institutions like the Meltwater Entrepreneurial
School of Technology and the University of Ghana, Legon as well as staff
of Penplusbytes. The team will be monitoring social media for 72 hours
non-stop on a rotational basis from 6th to the 8th of December, 2016 which
is before, during and after the elections.

Key words that have been categocategorisedtrends and incidents will be
tracked in real time on social media platforms and staff will verify
these, before producing rapid electoral incident reports to share with
diverse electoral stakeholders. Penplusbytes will share its real-time
incident reports with the Electoral Commission, National Elections
Security Task Force (NESTF), and other election stakeholders for prompt
action. A new addition to the software tracking platforms is the SMS short
code. All these will be done with embedded representatives in the
electoral management and observer control centers.

With funding from the Deutsche Welle (DW) Akademie and the National
Endowment for Democracy, this project seeks to promote peaceful,
transparent and credible elections in Ghana and support effective and
efficient information and knowledge exchange through a strategic and
structural engagement of citizens and the electoral management bodies
(Electoral Commission and National Elections Security Task Force - NESTF).

According to the executive director of Penplusbytes, Kwami Ahiabenu II,
“Technology is playing a key role in Ghana’s socio-economic development
and its application in the governance sector is no exception. This centre
and its activities during the elections is clearly in line with our vision
of being the leading institution for promoting good governance using
technology.”

During the 2012 Ghana elections, new digital technologies were applied by
all stakeholders in the elections continuum from the electoral management
body, political parties, electoral observers, down to the individual
voters.

Given this context, there is no doubt that ICTs is going to be a key
factor in the elections and this project will seek to enhance and
contribute to the democratic momentum that has already been built over the
years.

President John Dramani Mahama has opened the Accra Digital Center, an ultra-modern multi-million dollar project expected to significantly change the face of the country's digital landscape.

The Accra Digital Centre project, started in 2011 and financed by the World Bank and the Rockefeller Foundation, is a collection of 12 old warehouses of the Public Works Department, which have been renovated with each of the buildings occupying 735 square metres.  It makes a total of 8,820 square metres.

The project is one of the Government's initiatives to create opportunity for sustainable entrepreneurial employment for young Ghanaians as it is estimated to provide 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.

 President Mahama said but for the reforms that were carried out in the telecommunication sector between 1996 and 1998, internet penetration would have remained minimal in the country.

 He said Ghana now had a total of 37 million subscribers of cell phone lines although the population was about 27 million, because of the numerous reforms that allowed the private sector to invest in telecommunication.

 The President, therefore, said the current hue and cry over the privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana was because Ghanaians did not understand the repercussions and called on all to read and understand issues and move away from skepticism.

 President Mahama announced that apart from the Accra Digital Centre, the Government was also putting finishing touches to a National Data Centre deemed to be the largest centre in West Africa.

 "The Accra Digital Centre will boost job creation and enhance the drive for knowledge-led socio-economic growth and put Information, Communication Technology skills for self-sufficiency,” President Mahama added.

 On employment, President Mahama said apart from the absorption of about 10,000 youth at the Centre, the Government was also reviving some of the Kwame Nkrumah-led factories to provide more job opportunities.

 He said a new Tiles Company, which had the capacity to provide 600 jobs would soon be inaugurated in the Western Region.

 "Government is also providing direct support to the private sector, especially in the agricultural and pharmaceutical centres, to expand and create job opportunities for the youth."

 President Mahama paid a glowing tribute to late Dr Edward Salia, a former Minister of the then Transport and Communications, who initiated the reforms in the telecommunication sector for blazing the trail in that direction.

 Mr Henry Geoffrey Kerali, the Country Director of World Bank, expressed their pride in associating with the project, which he said, would contribute towards efficiency in e-governance and create jobs for all.

 He said the impact of the centre would go beyond Accra and contribute about 25 per cent of Ghana's Gross Domestic Product in the coming years.

Mr William Tevie, the Director General of the National Communication Authority, who read a speech on behalf of the Head of Rockefeller Foundation, said the completion of the project was in line with the Foundation's vision to create a number of jobs through ICT among others.

ICT TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CHURCHES

PCN ICT Training Center - Adabraka, is pleased to offer scholarships in practical training geared towards complimenting the church’s ICT skills and increase employability / effectiveness of members in their chosen career fields.

The training will focus on Microsoft Office suit: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, File Management and Internet. A professional certificate will be issued to all successful participants.

Details:

The church will be entitled to two scholarships for every ten members of the congregation who register for this course.

One scholarship will be due for five church members who register for this course

We would encourage reserving one scholarship slot for the pastoral team. All nominations are subject to the discretion of the Pastor in Charge.

Scholarships are 100% free for tuition. All other interested participants will pay GHS250 before start and GHS250 by completion before certificates are issued.

Minimum qualification: Basic literacy in English or SHS or others.

Duration: 1 month, Session: morning 8am-11pm OR Evening 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Classes Start date: 17th October 2016.

NCA committed to extend Internet services to rural areas

The National Communication Authority (NCA) is committed to ensuring that

Reduce Internet Data usage by Disabling Automatic Updates

Disable / Turn Off Automatic Updates In Windows 10, Here’s How

 

Unlike the majority of other versions that have come before it, automatic updates in Windows 10 cannot be simply tinkered with. Microsoft will push updates to your Windows 10 powered computer which will be automatically downloaded. The idea is to keep users up to date and safe with latestsecurity patches installed. Luckily, there are some ways around this.

We’ll be taking you through three different ways in which automatic updates in Windows 10 can be tackled to your preference.

Windows 10 automatically sets certain connection types as metered. This essentially means that certain connections, such as cellular services, often have data limitations and restrictions in place. Windows sets these as metered to prevent downloading tons of data that could prove costly. However, it is possible to set any connection type as being metered.

Step 1: Launch the Windows 10 Settings application (Windows key + I).

Step 2: Now click Network & Internet.

Step 3: Click Advanced options which appears below the list of Wi-Fi networks so you may have to scroll down a bit.

 

NCA cracks down on illegal frequency users on ISP bands

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has begun a frequency
monitoring and inspection exercise, which has led to the decommissioning
and confiscation of transmitters and antennas illegally operating on
frequency bands licensed for Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

The frequency bands in question are the 2.3GHz, 3.3GHz, 3.5GHz and 3.6GHz,
which according to the Authority are ‘licensed bands’ allocated
specifically for use by ISPs.

A statement from the NCA said so far the decommissioning and confiscation
of equipment have taken place in the Greater-Accra Region, but the
exercise will be extended to other parts of the country.

Free Wifi is coming to Accra by October

The Director General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), George Ata-Boateng, has announced deploying a Wifi for public use in Accra Metropolis by October this year. To ensure the smooth take-off of the project, NITA has selected seven communities including some educational facilities where the tech-driven infrastructure is being test-run (piloted). These communities are Makola, Accra New Town, Abossey Okai, Madina, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Development Studies (UDS) and Ghana Technology University College (GUTC).

24-year-old Alice Amoako, Ghanaian Develops App for Autistic Children

Living with autism in Ghana has just been made more bearable since HopeSetters, an autism center, came out with a locally configured autism app that helps children with autism receive better education. The privately funded center is the very first in Sub-Saharan Africa to make learning easier for kids with autism.

Speaking of her motivation, 24-year-old Alice Amoako (pictured) says that her desire to ease the strain of teaching and learning among children with special needs informed her decision to develop the app.

 “I [visited] an autism centre and had interactions with the caregivers and children, and I realized there was a need to help raise awareness. In my final year [at university], I had to do a project to complete my studies, and we developed the app,” she said.

Ghana currently has no official documentation or statistics on the state of children with autism; however, a recent report indicates that 1 in 87 children in Ghana under the age of 3 have autism with the neurological disorder being 4 times more prevalent in boys than in girls.

The Accra Trotro Apps Challenge

Some weeks ago, Accra saw the first-of-its-kind transport hackathon that focused on 315 routes in Accra, which were collected over a period of 2 months. With collaboration from the Concordia University and the French Agency for Development, AMA partnered MEST to birth the Accra Trotro Apps Challenge.

WAZIUP Internet of Things Project Launches In Accra

Almost everything is being hooked onto the internet now; watches, coffee-makers, cars, and even fridges. This has created the need to focus on technologies which cater to such needs and help to make sense of the numerous amounts of data these devices present us with. One of such initiatives propelling the Internet of Things (IoT) ‘movement’ is WAZUIP.

WAZIUP is an EU and African cooperation action targeting sub-Saharan African countries. It aims to accelerate innovation in Africa through cutting edge IoT cost-effective communication and big data technologies deployed on PaaS and know-how.

Closing Apps to Save Your Battery Only Makes Things Worse.

In the last week or so, both Apple and Google have confirmed that closing your apps does absolutely nothing to improve your battery life. In fact, says Hiroshi Lockheimer, the VP of Engineering for Android, it might make things worse.

Apps that are already in memory open quickly, rather than having to fully start again; it's like waking your computer from sleep rather than rebooting it completely. If you're into saving battery, there are lots of things you can do. Turn down screen brightness. Turn off background refresh for apps. Use Low Power Mode in iOS, or enable Doze on Android. Turn off location sharing for apps that don't need it (which is a good idea regardless). Put the whole thing in Airplane Mode, if you're feeling really crazy. But stop swiping your apps out of view, because it's not helping. If anything, it's making it worse.
